Probation staff supervise people in order to make our communities safer by reducing reoffending. There are two main types of staff who manage offenders: case managers and senior case managers.

If you are interested in a career in probation, we welcome people who have:

  • worked with individuals with challenging behaviour
  • the ability to enforce standards and procedures
  • an understanding of the importance of performance and quality in practice
  • the necessary experience

Qualifications and experience

To become a probation case manager you will need a VQ3 Diploma in Probation Practice or equivalent, and either voluntary or paid experience of working with vulnerable people

To become a senior case manager you will need a certificate of qualification in Social Work, Diploma in Social Work, Diploma in Probation Studies, CJL or equivalent

If you are interested in becoming a probation services officer, relevant voluntary experience is essential. One way to get voluntary experience is via schemes run by the HLNY CRC, for more information click here.

Interserve is at the forefront in developing new qualifications for staff across the sector. These will be available in 2018.
